Hemp is the worlds strongest fiber.
Hemp cloth is stronger, longer lasting, more resistant to mildew and cheaper to produce than cotton fabric. Its also naturally resistant to bugs so it doesn't require all the chemicals that cotton does. 50% of all pesticides in the world are sprayed on cotton.
The first Old Glory was made from hemp fabric.
Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on hemp paper.
Hemp paper lasts for centuries as opposed to wood pulp paper which has a 25 to 80 year lifespan.
Industrial hemp can produce 5-8 dry tons of fiber per acre, four times what a forest can, and a hemp crop can be harvested every 4 months.
Up until 1873 75% of the paper in the world was made from hemp.
What happened to all that production? In 1937 William Randolph Hearst (who owned millions of acres of prime timber lands) and Pierre Dupont (who had just patented nylon rope) began waging a two-sided war on hemp. Hearst used his publishing powers to create panic on the evils of hemp and marijuana while Dupont lobbied hard to his friend and Secretary of the Treasurer, Andrew Mellon, that without restrictions on hemp his company wouldn't be able to compete with the hemp producers and thus was born the Marijuana Tax Act, which placed a tax on hemp so high that it made its production unprofitable.
Who is the worlds largest importer of hemp? Its the United States. You see its totally legal to import hemp into this country, its just illegal to produce it. And who is the second leading exporter of hemp to the U.S.? China.
We do enough stupid stuff in this country, its time we tried to do some smart things and hemp production is a good place to start.
